The Plaza provides an armature for spontaneous activity. The space is redesigned to allow public access directly from the axis of Liberty to the lower esplanade with a cantilevered shade structure that reflects the lack of "solid ground."
WXY has been selected to convert the Pump House Plaza, a paved plaza built in 1980 over the roof of a mechanical room which houses the river-water cooling equipment servicing the original World Trade Center Buildings. Formerly an uninspired, unmaintained plaza, the renovations are intended to solve operational problems and provide additional amenities for the residents and the local community.
