P.O.R.T PROJECT ON REVITALIZING TORONTO

POSTED ON: 06.01.2006
WXY collaborated with six other firms including Snohetta, Sasaki, nARCHITECTS, H3, Balmori, Joe Lobko, and Halcrow Yolles, for this competition to renew the Toronto central waterfront.

The team was a combination of talented architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning firms who worked together to design several piers, slips, and new public spaces for the Toronto riverfront.

The collaboration between the seven firms yielded design ideas that emulate the diversity of the Toronto community, allowing a new experience at each stop along the waterfront.

The overall approach was rooted in three fundamental ideas: the city's connection to the lake; the power of weather; and the importance of gestures at different urban scales.

This design for Yonge Street Terminal created by WXY features a cantilevered pier jutting into the water to provide city-goers with panoramic views of the Central Harbor and the Islands. On the same trajectory as Yonge Street, the extension of a new pier allows the construction of a set of ferry slips as well as the symbolic extension of the longest street in the world.

Certain elements such as a wave-energy trellis interact and move with the rhythms and measures of the changing climate. Continuing with the team's all-weather approach, a primeval pine forest facing the city and a glass-roofed winter garden provide year-round greenery. These architectural features add a new, iconic element to the city and a center of activity at the foot of one of Toronto's most important streets.
