BRONX CHARTER SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS

POSTED ON: 11.10.2004
The Bronx Charter School for the Arts is the first civic commission signaling the revitalization of Hunt's Point.

The design of BSA reflects the school's founding principle that an arts education is critical to childhood development and learning. Color, space, and natural light create a direct physical connection with the content and aims of the curriculum.

The Bronx Charter School is recognized by the community as an asset for its aesthetic merit and contextual approach. The design uses syncopated color and art and dance studios as models of inspiration. By doing so, the design takes on a refreshing complexity not seen in most schools.

A community driven process enabled the creation of a plan that emphasized the arts and overall school unity.

The result of the participatory design process was a unique, light-filled space that dovetailed with the school's original mission.

WXY's process actively engages the teachers of the Bronx Charter School for the Arts, allowing them to participate directly with the design process.
